Biology and Agriculture Sites of Interest

Below is a partial list of sites of interest for

Agronomy & Horticulture

Agricultural Research Service - the Agricultural Research Service has a mission to: Provide access to agricultural information and develop new knowledge and technology needed to solve technical agricultural problems of broad scope and high national priority to ensure adequate availability of high-quality, safe food and other agricultural products to meet the nutritional needs of the American consumer, to sustain a viable and competitive food and agricultural economy, to enhance quality of life and economic opportunity for rural citizens and society as a whole, and to maintain a quality environment and natural resource base.

Bureau of Land Management - It is the mission of the Bureau of Land Management to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

Current Research Information System (CRIS) - CRIS is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) documentation and reporting system for ongoing and recently completed research projects in agriculture, food and nutrition, and forestry.

The National Agricultural Library (NAL) - NAL is a major international source for agriculture and related information. This Web site provides access to NAL's many resources and a gateway to its associated institutions.

Animal Science

Biology

Center for Conservation Biology (CCB) - The mission of the CCB is to help develop the technical means for the protection, maintenance, and restoration of life on this planet - its species, its ecological and evolutionary processes, and its particular and total environment; to help raise awareness, educate, and encourage personal involvement of the public and academics alike.

Lawrence Livemore National Laboratory's Biology and Biotechnology Research Program (BBRP) - the BBRP conducts basic and applied research in the health and life sciences in support of national needs and to enhance the laboratory's primary mission of national security.

Botany and Range Science

National Institute for the Environment - The goals of the NIE are to increase scientific understanding of environmental issues by supporting credible, problem-focused research; to assist decision making by providing comprehensive assessments of current knowledge and its implications; to facilitate and expand access to environmental information; and to strengthen capacity to address environmental issues by sponsoring higher education and training.

National Library for the Environment - The library addresses the need for objective, scientifically sound information on environmental issues.

National Park Service - The mission of the National Park Service is "...to promote and regulate the use of the...national parks...which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

Native Plant Conservation Initiative - The NPCI is a consortium of nine federal government member agencies and nearly 60 non-federal cooperators representing a various disciplines within the conservation field: biologists, botanists, habitat preservationists, horticulturists, resources management consultants, soil scientists, special interest clubs, non-profit organizations, concerned citizens, nature lovers, gardeners. NPCI members and cooperators work collectively to solve the problems of native plant extinction and native habitat restoration, ensuring the preservation of our ecosystem.

Natural Resources Conservation Service - The Natural Resources Conservation Service is the federal agency that works with landowners on private lands to conserve natural resources. Nearly three-fourths of the technical assistance provided by the agency goes to helping farmers and ranchers develop conservation systems uniquely suited to their land and individual ways of doing business. The agency also provides assistance to rural and urban communities to reduce erosion, conserve and protect water, and solve other resource problems.

Food Science and Nutrition

Microbiology

LLNL Human Genome Center - The short- and long-term goals of our effort are to: (1) develop biological and physical resources useful for genome research; (2) model and evaluate DNA mapping and sequencing strategies; (3) couple these resources and strategies optimally to construct ordered clone maps and DNA sequences of human chromosomes; and (4) use the map and sequence information to study genome organization and variation.

Government Agencies

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) - Our mission is to conserve, protect, and enhance fish and wildlife and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. Our major responsibilities are: migratory birds, endangered species, certain marine mammals, freshwater and anadromous fish, the National Wildlife Refuge System, wetlands, conserving habitat, and environmental contaminants.

U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) - The mission of the Department of the Interior is to protect and provide access to our Nation's natural and cultural heritage and honor our trust responsibilities to tribes.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - The mission of the EPA is to protect public health and to safeguard and improve the natural environment - air, water, and land - upon which human life depends.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service - the mission of the USDA Forest Service is to achieve quality land management under the sustainable multiple-use management concept to meet the diverse needs of the people.

USDA Forest Service: Forest Health Update - This is a summary highlighting major forest health concerns and what the Forest Service is doing about them.
